Licensed Plumbing Services for Somerset, TX

Somerset sits southwest of San Antonio in Bexar County, where most of the housing stock dates to the 1950s through 1980s. That age profile means original galvanized steel supply lines that corrode from the inside and restrict flow over decades, original cast iron drain lines approaching the end of their service life, and shutoff valves that have not moved in 30 years. Silverback serves all of Somerset with the full range of plumbing services, and we know exactly what to look for in homes of this era.

City served Somerset, TX County Bexar County Services offered 12 Availability 24/7 emergency service Licensed under RMP #43333

The defining plumbing challenge in Somerset is the age of the materials in the ground and in the walls. Galvanized steel supply lines — the standard for homes built before 1970 — corrode from the inside out. The corrosion product builds up on the pipe wall, gradually narrowing the interior diameter and reducing flow at every fixture. The pipe does not fail all at once; it fails at the thinnest corroded spot first, then progressively at others.

Cast iron drain lines from the same era are subject to cracking, root intrusion at joints, and separation over decades of soil movement. A camera inspection is often the only way to know how much of the drain system is still structurally intact before committing to a repair approach.

Some Somerset properties are on well water, and some are in rural Bexar County where lot sizes are larger than in a standard subdivision. We handle all of it throughout the area.

Somerset is approximately 25 miles southwest of San Antonio via US-90 W. We dispatch from 11844 Bandera Rd #3005, Helotes TX 78023.

All 12 Plumbing Services in Somerset

Every service below is available throughout Somerset. Service descriptions note where older housing materials affect the approach.

Emergency Plumbing

Burst pipes, major leaks, and drain backups in Somerset homes, 24 hours. Galvanized supply line failures in older homes can release a significant flow quickly once the corroded wall gives — we treat these as high priority calls.

Emergency plumbing

Drain Cleaning

Camera inspection and hydro jetting for slow and blocked drains. Cast iron drain lines in Somerset homes from the 1950s–1980s are at or past their expected service life — camera inspection before cleaning tells us whether we are working with a clog or a structural problem that cleaning alone will not solve.

Drain cleaning

Water Heater Installation and Repair

Water heater repair and replacement throughout Somerset. Older water heaters in Somerset homes may have original corroded supply connections and shutoff valves that need replacement at the same time as the unit itself — we include these in the quote before starting work.

Water heater service

Sewer Line Repair and Installation

Trenchless sewer repair and pipe lining for Somerset properties. Cast iron and clay tile sewer lines from older construction are prime candidates for lining or segment replacement rather than full excavation when the host pipe is still structurally acceptable.

Sewer line service

Gas Line Installation and Repair

Gas line inspection, leak detection, and repair throughout Somerset. Older black iron gas lines in homes from this era can corrode at fittings over time, particularly in areas with high moisture or soil movement.

Gas line service

Garbage Disposal Installation and Repair

Disposal repair and replacement throughout Somerset. Many older Somerset homes did not come with a disposal originally — we handle new installation alongside drain line inspection to confirm the sink drain can handle the added flow before the unit goes in.

Garbage disposal service

Toilet Installation and Repair

Older toilets in Somerset homes sometimes have corroded supply lines and shutoff valves that fail during attempted repair. We inspect and replace supply connections alongside any toilet work rather than leaving the old hardware in place.

Toilet service

Faucet Installation and Repair

Faucet repair and replacement throughout Somerset. In homes with galvanized supply lines, reduced flow at faucets is often mistaken for a faucet problem when the actual restriction is in the corroded pipe wall upstream. We identify the source before recommending a repair.

Faucet service

Water Softener Installation and Repair

Water treatment for Somerset homes on both city and well water supply. Softener installation in an older home sometimes requires updating the supply connection points and shutoff valves before the softener can be plumbed in correctly.

Plumbing Maintenance Plan

Scheduled inspections are particularly valuable in Somerset given the age of the housing stock. Annual checks on shutoff valves, supply lines, water heater condition, and drain line flow can identify problems before they become emergencies in an older home.

Maintenance plans

Yard Leak Detection and Repair

Non invasive leak detection for supply lines on Somerset properties. Older galvanized main supply lines running from the meter to the house can develop pinhole leaks that are invisible at the surface until significant water loss has accumulated.

Yard leak detection

Gas Fireplace Installation and Repair

Gas fireplace installation and repair throughout Somerset, including pilot light service and thermocouple replacement on older installed units. Propane connections available for rural Somerset properties not on the natural gas line.

Galvanized supply line replacement is one of the most common services on older Somerset homes — corrosion buildup inside the pipe restricts flow for years before the line finally fails.

What Older Homes in Somerset Mean for Plumbing

Galvanized Steel Supply Lines

Galvanized pipe was the standard for water supply in homes built before roughly 1970. Zinc coating on the interior corrodes when exposed to water over decades, and the corrosion product (iron oxide and zinc carbonate) accumulates on the pipe wall. A 3/4 inch supply line that started with a 3/4 inch interior diameter might have an effective flow area less than half that after 50 to 60 years. Homes with galvanized supply lines often see consistently low pressure at every fixture, regardless of what the street supply pressure reads at the meter. Replacement is the only permanent solution.

Cast Iron Drain Lines at End of Life

Cast iron drain lines installed in the 1950s through 1970s typically have a service life of 50 to 80 years depending on wall thickness, soil conditions, and what goes down the drain. Somerset homes from that era are now at or past the midpoint of that range. Common failure signs include slow drains that return quickly after cleaning, odors, and wet spots in the yard above the sewer line run. Camera inspection is the only reliable way to assess how much of the system is still viable before deciding on lining, spot repair, or full replacement.

Shutoff Valves That Have Not Moved in Decades

Shutoff valves in older homes are often original gate valves — a design that is reliable when exercised regularly but prone to seizing when left in the open position for 20 or 30 years without being moved. A seized shutoff valve is not a problem until it is. If a pipe bursts or a fixture fails and the shutoff valve will not close, water keeps flowing until the street meter valve is found and turned. We recommend having all shutoff valves tested and replaced with modern ball valves during any major plumbing service visit in an older Somerset home.

Mix of Rural and Residential Properties

Somerset and the surrounding area include both town residences and rural Bexar County properties on larger lots. Some rural properties use private wells that draw from local aquifers, while homes closer to town are on the municipal supply. Rural Somerset properties on wells may have aging pressure tanks and submersible pumps that have not been serviced in years alongside the same aging interior plumbing found throughout the area.

Frequently Asked Questions — Plumbing in Somerset

How do I know if my Somerset home still has galvanized pipe?

If your home was built before 1970 and has never had the supply lines replaced, it almost certainly has galvanized steel supply pipe. You can confirm by finding a visible section of pipe — usually under the kitchen sink or where the supply enters the home. Galvanized pipe is silver gray, magnetic, and will show rust colored staining at threaded fittings. If you run a magnet along it and it sticks, it is steel. Copper pipe is not magnetic, and plastic pipe (PEX or CPVC) is flexible or cream colored.

My water pressure is low throughout the house. Is it the pipe or the street supply?

In a Somerset home with galvanized supply lines, low pressure throughout the house almost always points to interior pipe restriction rather than street supply. We can check the pressure at the meter versus the pressure at the first interior fixture to confirm where the restriction is occurring. If the meter pressure is normal but the interior pressure is low, the supply lines are the source. If both readings are low, the issue is upstream of the meter.

Can old drains be fixed without replacing everything?

In many cases, yes. Trenchless pipe lining can restore structural integrity to a cast iron drain line that still has acceptable wall thickness. The liner bonds to the interior of the existing pipe, sealing cracks and joint separations without requiring excavation. Camera inspection is the first step — it tells us whether the host pipe is a good candidate for lining or whether the wall is too deteriorated for the liner to adhere properly.

My shutoff valve for the toilet will not close. Is that a big risk?

Yes, it is a meaningful risk. If the toilet supply line fails or the fill valve sticks open, a non functioning shutoff valve means water will keep flowing until you find the main shutoff at the meter outside. Depending on the meter location and your familiarity with it, that can take several minutes — long enough to cause water damage to the floor and subfloor. Shutoff valve replacement is a straightforward service call, and we recommend addressing any non functioning valve as soon as you discover it rather than waiting until the fixture it controls needs repair.

Do you work on rural Somerset properties on well water?

Yes. Rural properties in the Somerset area with private wells are within our service coverage. We handle pressure tank inspection and replacement, pump assessment, sediment filtration, and all standard interior plumbing repair alongside well system work. Call with your address and we can confirm coverage and dispatch accordingly.

I was very happy with the job that David and Brendan from Silverback Plumbing & Drain performed on my toilet. They were able to come out to my house within a day of my phone call, which was wonderful. They replaced the seal in my toilet tank quickly and showed me how my old seal had bumps on it (causing it not to seal properly anymore). Additionally, they fixed the chain that connected to the handle for free after I explained that sometimes the handle doesn’t flush properly. I also was satisfied with the price that I was charged for replacing the seal in my tank. David informed me that I should contact SAWS to let them know that I had the seal in my tank repaired in order to possibly get them to reimburse me some money (if the most recent bill that I had was higher than my previous bills). David and Brendan were very knowledgeable, professional, and personable. If you need to have a plumbing job done, don’t hesitate to use Silverback Plumbing & Drain!

We had a great experience with Silverback Plumbing! Brian and Brendon recently replaced our water heater and repaired a leaky tub faucet, and they did an outstanding job from start to finish. Both of them were professional, friendly, and took the time to explain everything clearly before and after the work was completed. They arrived on time, worked efficiently, and left the area spotless when they were finished. It's refreshing to work with technicians who truly care about the quality of their work and customer service. Silverback Plumbing has earned our trust with their reliability, honesty, and excellent workmanship. We highly recommend Silverback Plumbing, and a special thank you to Brian and Brendon for providing such exceptional service. We will definitely call them again for any future plumbing needs!
